The Key issues

Economic Development & Enterprise

Leyton has historically had an unemployment rate higher than the Borough average (Borough avg 5.6%, Leyton avg 8.1%). The recent alignment of our Team Leyton’s priorities to the Local Area Agreement (LAA) saw us take on the challenge of developing the local economy together with addressing unemployment and skill under this block of the LAA.

Baseline

We know from our 2007 ward survey that residents’ top priorities were:

  • Access to jobs through Job Fairs
  • Help with improving employability and skills
  • Access to short faster vocational courses that lead to jobs

Our Response for 2007/8

  • Responding to residents’ feedback and employment statistics for the ward Team Leyton will deliver the following:
  • Promote more employment and training opportunities through coordinated Job Fairs. In partnership with O-regen and Integria 3 Job Fairs have been schedule to take place over 2007/8.
  • Support the local economy by exploring development opportunities of Social Enterprises owned and managed by local people. This work is being delivered in partnership with Integria. Team Leyton is also a strong advocate and partner of the Leyton Enterprise Forum (LEF)
  • Develop a programme of vocational training for employment. We recognise that language may be a barrier for many of our residents so will seek to address this issue.

Successes in 2007

  • provision of a Worknet Outreach Officer (WOO) dedicated to Leyton to support unemployed residents into work – if you live in Leyton and would like support into work please contact Marlon on 0208 539 1660

  • Support to the Festival of Youth Arts Programme which offers paid employment, volunteering opportunities and training to a number of local young people in the arts.
  • Job Fairs attended by over 300 people
