Safer & Stronger Communities
The baseline

Reducing crime and perception of high crime levels
- Burglary is seen as less of a problem in 2007 than in 2003 (46% to 38%)
- Teenagers hanging round on the streets is becoming more of a problem (60% to 66%)
Littering and general appearance
People said this was an important priority but also recognised that things are getting better
- Litter and rubbish is less of a problem in 2007 than it was in 2003 (23% to 16%)
- Abandoned cars less of a problem (50% to 35%)
- Graffiti / vandalism less of a problem (55% to 45%)
- Satisfaction with street lighting up (16% to 23%)
- Those very satisfied with parks and open spaces up (6% to 11%)
Our response in 2007/8:
- Reduce crime levels and residents’ perception of crime being high
- Improve general cleanliness of the area, increase reporting of fly-tipping
- Increase residents’ uptake of recycling
- Increase residents’ involvement in maintaining green spaces eg at St Mary’s Churchyard, Adopt a Flower-bed scheme
- Reduce overcrowding in social and private sector housing
Successes:
- Team Leyton secured £75,000 for environmental improvements at St Mary’s Church
- We supported a kitchen waste recycling scheme for estate-based residents
We supported 2 Give or Take days exchanging unwanted goods and furniture, we provided target hardening to 25 vulnerable homes in Leyton.
